2015 Culture Day at West Haven
Solomon declared in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish”. It was with this in mind, we the teachers of Children’s Defense Fund International (C.D.F.) School at West Haven crafted the West Haven Children’s Home first Culture Day Event. The event was held on the grounds on July 30th, 2015 and showcased Jamaican Cuisine.
This event was fruitful in its effort to raise funds for the home. One of the aims of the culture day was to sensitize the people about the home, and to get the community and other persons from the Parish of Hanover and Child Developmental Agency (CDA) involved.
We had delicious foods such as: Jerk Chicken, Jerk Pork, Jerk Rabbit, Ackee and Saltfish, Mackerel rundown, Escovish Fish, Shrimp Soup, Bammy, Festival, Roast yam, Roast Breadfuit etc. Juices and a variety of pastries were on sale. Music was provided by a community member Mr. Kammy free of cost. We also had a craft area displaying the students’ school work and items they made. Our friend Rafael was in charge of this area.
The Culture Day event was well attended by persons from the community, The Wanna bees, Fair Haven visitors, and persons from CDA. The students had a wonderful day dancing and partaking of the dishes prepared. For lunch they had jerk chicken and rolls with juice.
We would like to sincerely thank our sponsors: Mission Jamaica from Minnesota U.S.A., Alliance One, from Freeport and Tayney Ltd. Montego Bay, for their support in cash and in kind, towards the venture. Thanks also to all the members of staff and members from the community who worked hard and supported in kind to make this event a success. Proceeds from the event will be used to procure diapers for the children.
We look forward to another productive culture day 2016. To God Be the glory great things he has done.
